it's an interesting story of a Malian woman, fighting to stay in America, citing female circumcision and forced marriage in Mali as a violation of her human rights.

I don't think I've ever talked about it but it is WIDELY practiced in Mali. It's performed differently and at different times depending on where you are from, and it has nothing to do with religion, it's a completely cultural thing. In my village they perform the excision when the girls are around 5-7 years old.
